{hitgos} A note on Hoverward

Jadalulu coined a name for HitGoS Edward: Hoverward. I suppose it’s fitting. He does hover and is otherwise possessive. :)

Anyway, I wanted to take a little time to make a few comments regarding the story in general. Mostly because I just want to talk about it. And I have a blog and that’s why it exists.

I am really amazed by the sheer difference of opinion by everyone who has reviewed this story. There are people who feel sorry for Edward and wish Bella would give in. Some think Edward needs a good ass kicking by Bella once she’s changed. A few say that Bella is living a nightmare. A lot say they love how Bella is strong and hasn’t given into his charms yet. Some have called Edward hot. Someone compared what he was doing to rape. Many are angry with Bella for not seeing how much Edward needs her and returning his unrequited love. (Love though? I understand the interpretation of love during the later chapters, but halfway through? I’m not so sure that’s what he felt back then. I’m not so sure he knows what he’s feeling now.)

The Cullens have everyone up in arms too. Why aren’t they helping? Why are they allowing this to happen? Carlisle and Esme are horrible “parents.” Everyone is so out of character. Etc. I want to share the response I sent to someone. I don’t feel the actual review itself is necessary, because this applies to the story as a whole:

I’m glad you want to scream at Esme and slap Edward. Those are the emotions I hope people get. Because like real life, these characters aren’t perfect and they make poor decisions. If you’re not at some point frustrated by every single one of them, then I’m not doing my job. The one thing I hope people keep in mind is that these aren’t humans, these are vampires. They look at life and the world differently. Also, I’ve really tried to shy away from Esme and Carlisle being the parents. It is an act that is in place for their public persona only. Carlisle is the patriarchal figure of the family, and he tries to lead by example, but everyone is on an equal playing field and capable of making their own decisions. They seven of them are bonded together because they want to be, not out of a familial obligation.

Someone also said this: “What I love so much about your story is there is no black or white. Its all gray.” She also commented on how sad it is that no one understands how difficult it is for Edward to hear everyone, and how she thought the family shouldn’t have abandoned him in Chapter 15. And because I’m lazy and don’t want to actually restructure my words to make a well thought out blog post, I’m going to copy and paste my reply once again. ;)

That is pretty much the whole underlying theme of the story, and I’m not sure if everyone picks up on that. Everyone is quick to say who’s right, who’s wrong, who should be doing what… but real life isn’t like that. Everyone makes bad decisions. There’s always a better way something could have been handled. But who’s to say what’s right and wrong? Especially when you throw in essentially a completely different species. It changes the dynamic a bit.

They don’t understand Edward, and it is sad. But how could they? When I started writing this, I really thought of how crappy it would actually be to be able to read everyone’s mind. Personally, I think it’s logical for Edward–once sane and rational–to fly off the handle when he met Bella. People are quick to say he’s “bad,” but is he really? I didn’t try to make his base character all that far off from canon, but I believe this is what he could have become. Desperate is always the word that comes to mind, and greed brings out the worst in people.

So there are just some of my thoughts. Thanks everyone for all the comments. They mean more to me than words can express. ♥
